If I put myself back into my 16yr old shoes, I wouldnt get an Audi. The main reason its expensive to fix. Whether or not you maintain it parts do fail.

Is it just as expensive to maintain though as say a BMW?

Less than a BMW or S4. More than a Toyota or GM.
No 1.8 non-turbo in the states.

Well that I think really depends on who you ask.
I think Audis are cheaper to own than BMWs. However as with any used car you need to make sure it has been well maintained.

My friend and I bought our cars at the same time with the same mileage on them. He bought a BMW 328is and I bought my Audi A4 1.8t. We have both had to put our share of money into the cars because we really did not do our research and find the common problems of our cars. I have put a little bit less money into my Audi than he has into his BMW though.

(I hope my friend doesn't read this) But... I drove in every snow storm we had this year with almost bald tires and he crashed into a snow bank with snow tires on.

With that said...
When I was 16 I bought a European car... I wish I had not. Unless you have parents who will help you maintain the car or just an excess of money I would go with something from Japan land personally.

Good luck mate, picking a car is a really hard thing to do and no matter what you pick at times you will have buyers remorse. I've wished I had a BMW and my friend has wished he bought an Audi but in the end we both really enjoy our cars.

1.8L just means 1.8 liter, the size of the engine, it's a 1.8T. the key with audi's is doing the maintenance and being able to wrench. if you got those 2 things down, they're not that expensive to maintain. a honda is gona be a lot cheaper, but then you dont get the luxury of an audi. or the awd and turbo

that price is fair, maybe get him to lower it a few hundred and make sure the timing belt has already been done or tell him to drop the price at least a grand
