Default new member introduction and problem

Hey guys, my name is andy. I just recently bought a 99 a4 1.8t for 1000. It has the old style tensioner that let go and bent the valves. The interior is perfect and the exterior has a couple scratches.
Here she is.

Here is the problem, when i timed the cams together by the notches and then made sure there was 16 links in between. when I put the the valve cover back on the timing gear didnt line up with the notch in the cover. here are some pictures of what im talking about
intake cam

exhaust cam

timing chain marks set as the pictures above and this is wear the gear sits?

Does anyone know if this is correct. help me

Isn't the cam gear supposed to have a dot that lines up with somewhere on the head? If the cam gear isn't lining up where it should be (assuming your mark is really where it should be) then your cam timing is off since there is a key way that wouldn't allow the gear to be put on the wrong way.

one of the last pictures if have the timing marks highlighted in yellow. In the fsm it says to align both cams with the arrows in the cam caps and the notch in the cam which i did but when i put the valve cover back on it looked as the cam was retarded about 10 degrees(see the picture with the cam gear and valve cover marks in yellow). I have done plenty of timing belts on audis( i worked at a repair shop for about 6 years before moving on to building motorcycles), but the only thing i have done around the chain is replace the tensioner seals.

when the cam gear is on t.d.c this is what the front cam lobes look like. 1223147739.jpg?t=1223148040. It either has radical cam timing or it is correct. Im going to put the head back on and crank it over by hand and see if its cool. then do a compression test.

I fixed the problem. It turns out that you can flip around the cam gear, It has timing marks on both sides. Once i flipped it the rear chain timing marks and the gear both lined correctly.
