For some reason the filter gets really hard to loosen by hand, so a filter wrench could be necessary.

I hope this can help to get you started. Oh, and i suggest using fully synthetic oil to help prevent sludge build-up.
wow, what an awesome post, this is just what i need to get started

I got instructions to change the air filter but for some reason,i couldn't get the air filter duct off,it won't come off, when i pull it up and from side to side, its on their very firm, unless there are screws or clips holding the duct in place? oh,and my mechanic only uses synthetic oil in my 1997 vw jetta 4 cyl and my 2001 Audi A4 1.8T 4 cyl I can use any oil in my 1996 buick Regal

P.S. how in hell did you get your engine bay so clean? mine isn't bad,its pretty clean for a 9 yr old car but yours looks so clean,i would cook eggs n grits and biscuits on it and eat off it.

First separate the duct that's connected to the short piece at the front of the car. Then pop it out by pulling up on the part that's connected to the air box. It doesn't have any clips, only the air box does. Don't worry, it wont break, it's very flexible. Oh and this is just a pic I found online, it's not my car lol. To make it look this way though, you could use some Simple Green with some rags, then rinse with a little water, and then Armorall the hell out of everything.
