Newb needs help
Hello I'm kinda new to the whole Audi thing. I got my pride and joy an 01 A4 1.8TQM a couple of months ago ran great. Now its throwing a misfire and lean code. When you stomp on the gas at like 2K RPM it lacks torque then starts picking up at 3K RPm and around 4K RPM starts will buck and cut like crazy. The CEL will start flashing within a few seconds of the hard bucking. Any ideas?
the lack of torque at 2k RPMs is normal. the bucking is not. get your codes scanned and see which cylinder is misfiring. your problem is most likely either a: very old spark plug (might as well change them now anyway, they are cheap), or a bad coil pack, or a bad ICM (ignition controler, which controls the coil packs).
if you find out which cylinder is misfiring and it still does it after you change the spark plugs, change the coil pack on that cyl with one from a different cyl. if the misfire follows the coil pack to the next cylinder, the problem is a bad coil. if it stays in the same cyl. its a bad ICM.

Multiple random misfires, misfires cylinder and 2.
Changed plugs like a week ago gapped to .028, MAF readings are good, no vaccum leaks or boost leaks. Wouldn't the CEL light flashing after the insane misfiring mean an emisions related componet like an O2 sensor?

flashing means it is currently misfiring, or at the very least it means theres something really bad that needs your immediate attention and you shouldnt drive with the CEL flashing, 95% of the time its for a misfire. take the coil from cyl 2 and switch it with another. if it misfires on the other cyl after the swap, you need to replace that coil. if it still is #2 misfiring you need a new ICM.
Hopefully thats all you need... I did that with my S4 (misfire cyl 3) and swapped spark plugs, coils, icms, everything and non of it fixed it... then did a compression test... cyl 1,2, 4-6 all good (about 170ish or so) but cyl 3 - o psi. Had a bent intake valve. HAHA
I doubt that is your problem though. Mine was caused from a small nozzle for my W/M kit coming off and getting sucked through the engine.

Ketamine1, do you have a chip? If so then your gap is correct at .028". Everything I read on here showed that a 1.8T that is stock should run a .032" gap. I don't think you'll have problems related to that, and you shouldn't hurt anything, but still...
Yea i'm chipped. I found a couple of vaccum leaks which could have possibly caused the lean code. If not it's gonna be fun tryin to figure this out. Hope its just a coil pack. Again thanks for all the help. Will keep ya updated.
