Default OBD plug missing?

Hello all, so i got a problem lol. Recently i got the check engine light turned on and i took the car to the mechanic and he told me the OBD plug is not in the back ashtray as it should be. Its weird the actual casing and the sign for engine check is there but there is nothing there like someone just ripped it out.

Under the steering wheel he said was an audi only plug.

my audi is 1997 a4 2.8 liter quatro

i was wondering if i take the console apart it would be there laying somewhere, he thought the dealership did it so people have to take it to the audi shop.

Just wanted to hear your thought about this, and if i should bother looking for it somewhere or not = )

Should be under the knee bolster left side by trunk release. If it's not there or in the rear ashtray then it's probably hanging out above the knee bolster. It's easy to dislodge from its "mount."

As far as I know it wouldn't be in the rear *** tray unless it's a UK car.

hmm wierd yes next to the hood release thing there is a plug but the mechanic said that its not OBDII plug but it's audi plug(no idea what that is).

The ashtray got the symbol for the OBDII plug but nothing is there.

Alright ill look closer to that plug right now maybe take a pic of it and compare it to a OBDII plug or post it here.

Thanks for your help onepoint8tee

oh and maybe the mechanic i took it to is an idiot = )

its under the knee bolster, the 1996 B5 had the port in the rear ashtray but in 1997 audi moved it under the knee bolster to conform to US OBD requirments. so audi just left the vacant port there.

Well i got no auto zone or pepboys near me since i am in Canada and Canadian tier stores charge $105 to read the CEL fault codes.

I just wanted him to read the codes and i thought any mechanic should be able to do this.

Thanks for help guys
