You can definitely replace the switch yourself. When my switch died out I had no idea what I was doing. I even forgot to disconnect the battery terminal ( nothing exploded )
Just make sure that your steering wheel doesnt lock and that little black circular switch needs to go back exactally how it was removed(you'll know what I mean if you get there) because if not, your steering will be off and you'll have to take it off/on to correct it.

I know from experience.lol Took me no more than 1 hour to replace and he's charging for 4 hours?

I would take the car back to him to fix the brakes for free instead.
I got my switch from.......germanautoparts.com for around 130ish.

i had my codes read and all I got was a code indicating a boost leak at the engine, which I fixed. Will I need to get it scanned when the lights are on?

No the rest of the codes should be stored regardless of what lights are on. Who scanned them and where? If you have VAG-Com or know someone who does, i'd read the ABS module, can't think of the block # off the top of my head.

I did that, thanks. i would imagine that the garage will have one so I can take it to him for inspection and get it scanned. And then see what he says and ponder it.

VAG-COM is different than a basic scanner and is specific to VW/audi, so a typical garage will not have one. A mechanic who deals with mainly euro cars should have one, and of course the dealer.

If you have a lap top I think you can still download the free version. Then you can get a cable for like 15 bucks and do it yourself

i may have to do that CCA4. I called the mechanic and he said it is because the rings that are associated with the abs sensors are old and rusty and falling off. He said he will need to clean the sensors and put in new rings. I have no idea what he was talking about. does that sound like a legitimate cause for the abs light. Hew also said that the pads he used are too aggressive thus causing the grinding noise. not too sure about that also.

If a sensor ring is cracked it will throw a code, yes.
