oh my god im pissed
so whats going on i just did all of my standard maintenance t belt serp water pump plus a fuel filter and fuel pump, wow that was a mouthful right. ok well i went on a drive with some bimmers um to mount rainier which was just to much fun so yeah that was liek two weeks ago now. well i think all is well until i drive from seattle to chelan like 150 miles when all of the suddem my power steering goes out. what a great surprise so i stay the night stressing over what it is going to be and whats it gonna cost, i get it towed back thank god for AAA 100 free miles so the extra 50 miles cost me 207 dollars.i found out it was just a return hose and am getting my car back tomorrow. but man i dont know what to do. im am so stressed out about this s**t. ahhh i dont know i love my audi but its so expensive and i dont know how to work on it my buddy has a bimmer and his dad and bro know how to work on them i dont know if i should just sell the mother f**ker and get a bmw or just find a way to learn how to fix mine any suggestions im sorry just needed to vent on what is going on
bro, straight up, its not that hard. you just need to know how to read instructions then execute with the RIGHT tools. its that simple. its not as hard as looks you just need that... and ample amounts of patience.
seriously, i knew nothing before i got my audi and started hanging out here. now i've done a full brake job, power steering pump, radiator, serp belt tensioner and other things... its all about turning those wrenches and NOT digging your self into a hole by breaking things. start with a small job and get some help from somebody who knows what they're doing, after that go bigger and bigger. if you can work on one car you can work on another to a certain extent so get in there.
With the audis you either need A) a friend who is a mechanic (maintenence costs are brutal as you know) or B) the motivation to fix things yourself.
As for your friends with the bimmers, they arent that different of cars so they should be able to help you out. Given the vast knowledge base on these forums/audizine/audiworld and a Bentley manual, there is nothing you and a few buddies cant figure out.

ik how yah feel man, but i am up to the task of trying to repair the thing myself, now granted i havent run into any major problems or maintenance yet (knock on wood) but i think it will be fun because of me liking to tinker with things lol with the support of the guys on this forum, and the ones over on the zine and a few tools im sure i can get most of the stuff done myself!! just keep your head up and think of working on your car as spending quality time with your love andgetting to knowher a little better every time [sm=gears.gif]
get yourself a haynes or bentley manual, its as simple as that, withone of thoseand the forums you can do anything. I recommend thebentley even though its more expensive. The haynes is based on the VWpassat/A4 and the benetly is strickly a4.
i got the bentley manual on dvd for ~$70 shipped (ebay seller bimmerzone). honestly, i havent used it all that much yet. right after i bought the car, i did the timing belt/water pump/all other belts/etc job, flushed EVERY fluid in the car and put in the right ones, replaced the downpipe, among many other things, and 99% of the time I used a write up found on the net between audidiy.com or audiworld. i only ended up using it for torque specs and to find the actual fluid capacities.
