Default Oh no. Engine abruptly stopped.

I was comming home tonight, and i was going uphill. At about 30 mph, and around 2000 rpm, when the engine just ran stopped spinning, I dont recall it making any grinding or popping noise. However, when i try and start it, the starter spools and turns the engine, but extremely freely. I dont hear any compression. The belt for the alternator spins, So i opened the timing cover to see inside. And the belt is still in good conditon, and in 1 piece, but not moving. I can feel the engine vibrate a little bit when the starter is spinning. The belt didnt break. There is no smoke or oil, or any abnormal noises/smells, or anything. When it shut off i didnt hear any Ping or clunk or any sounds. it just seemed like i lifted off the gas slowly untill the motor stopped.

When was the last time you changed your oil? Maybe a piston seized? Just a thought, I'm not an expert in diagnosing things like that...

Wait... the accessory belt spins with the starter, but not the timing belt? Hate to say it, but either it popped and you cant see it (prolly), or the crank pully did (doubt it).

Sounds like the crank pulley locating lug / peg has sheared.

yep you sheared off the key holding the timing pully to the end of the crank most likely. sorry to say you have a lot of work ahead of you...

yeah thats what im thinking. Sence the timing belt seems to be in one piece and in good condition. I HOPE i didnt do any damage to the valves. it wasnt revving that high, and it was a light load. And i didnt hear any bad noises

with a blown engine if you can get anything over $1500 it would be a good deal. if you could do some mechanical work yourself you could get significantly more money for the car, or just keep it and drive it yourself. you can get a replacement head in working condition for $500-800 or so. new timing belt kit $200. $100 head gasket, $60 new head bolts and a head bolt tool, plus probably $100 for misc other things. you can have it back on the road for around $1000 if you have some basic tools and can follow directions. its not terribly hard to put the car in service position and swap heads. usually the pistons can be saved as long as the rods didnt get bent and nothing hit the cylinder walls, which is somewhat rare.
