Default Oil guard on camshaft necessary?

I tried to put my valve cover on and i cannot get the valve cover to seat with the plastic little oil guard over the cam, and its also cracked.

Is it necessary?

I need to know.

I'd leave it on. If you can't fit the valve cover, then either the splash shield isn't positioned right or the valve cover isn't going on 100% straight.

It's there to keep the oil from slinging off of the intake cam. I'm not sure if its more for lubrication purposes or to keep oil from flying out of the filler cap on the valve cover or what, but I'd leave it on. I'm sure its a cheap part and like Devil said, if you can't get the valve cover on with it in there, its not on right.
