Default P1340 code 2000 1.8 atw

I'm chasing a P1340, which is either the Engine Speed Sensor or the Cam Position Sensor, per Bentley. (By the way, the car runs great even when throwing the code) I have easily checked for resistance and voltage at the sensor plugs, which all check out (I have cleared the code). The next steps involve the Audi "test box" which mentions checking connector pins back to sockets 82, 90, 108 for 1.5 ohms max. I never hear about anyone using this test box, so are the pins at the ECU harness marked with numbers corresponding to the Sockets? Thus I can check continuity without the test box? Thanks

i think you are looking in the wrong place. it is very rare for simple sensors like cam sensor or crank sensor to go bad. its only a magnet. rosstech wiki states that the correlation between the two is out of spec due to a few possible things-
stretched tbelt
incorrect timing chain timing (unlikely)
skipped tooth on belt

so it pretty much boils down to when was the last time the belt was changed? i would check the timing first off. set the crank at tdc and make sure the mark on the cam gear and make sure it lines up very close to mark on the valve cover.

if those are dead on or very close, i would look for used cam sensor and crank sensor and try them out. they should be pretty easy to find at most junkyards, or i might even have some extras

TBelt and all related work was done by me within the last 25k miles. I've attached the Bentley page mentioning the two sensors as the cause for p1340. If there is more practical, real world info out there, please continue to suggest. I've ordered both sensors from ECS and they were only about $30 each. The car has 191,000 miles so I'm not buying top end sensors.

Can anyone give me some info about the audi test box, and can I check continuity of wiring from the ECU harness back to sensors via a numbering system on the harness? I know I should just open the ECU box and look, but it is cold outside.......

Also, funny thing about magnets: the magnetic thermometer on the side of my woodstove loses magnatism after several years of exposure to high temp. I don't see why this couldn't happen on a hot 1.8 motor over a decade+.
