PCV & Suction Pump

PCV & Suction Pump
Hey guys,
I did some searching, but couldn't find the answer; what is the "suction pump"? What is in it?
See this link for example: http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-.../Emission/PCV/
Not too long ago, I redid all my pcv breather hoses with oil safe silicone, put in an in-line cf catch can (there was a couple tbs worth of oil in the TB), cleaned the check-valve and didn't even notice the "suction pump". I haven't looked in it yet, but I take it that it's more than just a multi-connection coupler? Is it a one-way valve? Is this something I should clean out?
On a tangent, I have to say I'm becoming more and more disappointed with the Bentley manual. Pretty sure it doesn't have even the PCV hose routing for the 30v v6 (it does for 1.8t in turbo section), and I'm also finding index page errors. For instance, I had to change the cam chain tensioner/adjuster. Look it up in the back, says it's E-15-21. Go to E, it ends at 15-18. Turns out the correct section is in E-15-14. Kind of annoying when you spend a hundred bucks and the internet is more reliable! lol. Oh well.
