B5s have a central locking pump and CU in the rear on the pass side behind the lining. You likely have water entry in the trunk are causing issues like you've described. Pull the lining and inspect the harness for corrosion and water entry.
thank you for the info! Its a 1999 audi a4 2.8 quattro.also along with the other problems, the abs light is on and the brake light is blinking in the dash. this guy owed my a bunch of money so he gave me this car "this is such a great deal for you".........a$$hole.
The buttons are for the tiptronic, you likely need to repair or replace the tiptronic shifter gate in the center console. If the brake light is flashing, you likely have a bad communication code from the ABS CU, but you'll need to read out the codes before you throw parts at it.
Where are you (and the car) located?

I live in oregon. This is such a nightmare, i have been wanting an audi for so long and now that i have one i have problem after problem. so are you saying i should have someone with a scan tool run it and see what codes pop up? thank you all for all of your help!
Most of us use VAGcom as a DIY home scanner, available here: http://ross-tech.com/
If you plan on working on the car yourself, another good idea is to purchase the Bentley Repair manual, also available on Ross-Tech's website. Don't waste your time or money with Haynes or Chiltons for Audi. Skip right to the Bentley.
It sounds like you've inherited a basket-case. Though it's gonna be an up-hill battle, it's not beyond repair. Check the stickies, the FAQ, and check out Audiworld's tech section for help. http://www.audiworld.com/tech/
Good luck!
Or you just keep replacing parts until the lights go away
If you having these problems now.... i can just imagine the amount of work needed under the car.
