Power Steering Pump
So, my 2000 A4 needs a new power steering pump, and our mechanic is saying that will cost us from about $450-500 to replace. Naturally this seems a bit steep, and I looked up prices for the pumps and they can go from about $150 to $200 for aftermarket pumps..
My question is, how much is reasonable for the pump alone? And I'm talking about an official Audi pump. The dealer probably ordered the pump already, but I'd like to know... do I have to worry about not having an official part?

A re-man'd purchased aftermarket will run you $350-$400 + shiiping. ECSTuning has it listed for $369 or $380 depending on the VIN.

The dealer might be charging you more, but you have a warranty (usually 2 years) on the part, be it re-man'd or new. If you aren't replacing the pump on your own, you won't save anything by buying your own pump. It won't have a warranty and the dealer won't guarantee or warranty the labor because it will be installed as "customer supplied parts."
If you are having the pump replaced at an aftermarket repair shop, ask about the warranty. Call your local Audi dealer parts department and ask them how much they charge for the pump so you can compare prices. Additionally, call the service department and ask how much they charge to install the pump and what their warranty is.

grab one off of a car being parted out here. thats what i did and i've never had a problem. the pumps dont really ever fail unless improperly lubricated. labor is whats gona kill you. or you can DIY and it should cost under $100.

Thanks for all the tips and info. But, like Tweaked guessed, I am not the kinda guy to DIY. I just don't have the skills. And as much as I'd love to try doing **** myself to save money I just don't have the time.
Also... I wouldn't know where to begin to getting the bumper and radiator off. I've seen it done and I know I'd mess it all up. I am willing to pay to get it right the first time.
But, again, thanks!

But the first time isn't easy either. When you walk into a Porsche, Audi, or VW shop, you'll see techs remove front clips in minutes. Trust me, I used to do it to replace friggen horns all the time or put cars in "service position" to change Audi/VW water pumps and t-belts. Without the proper tools or experience, it takes time and patience, especially when it comes to not scratching the paint!
