The 30v and 1.8T both use a .032" gap but it seems like the 12v was around .040" if I remember right. I called ECS and they told me what it should be - I'm sure they'll tell you. My Haynes said it was .063" which is so wide the car won't even start. Call ECS - they'll tell you, and post up for others to find later on.

I would personally run it between .032-.040, as underpowered as the 2.8L engine is, it still has higher compression than the average engine.

If it was on the boot end of the plug, it's likely a leak in the valve cover gasket, dripping down onto the plug area. Clean up the engine over the plug with degreaser and check over the next few days to see if there are signs of a fresh leak. I seriously doubt it'd be anything inside as any oil leaking into the cylinder past the rings would just burn away.
