Default Purchasing an A4...

Hey guys. I'm new to the forums, and to Audi's in general. I've always loved the A4's and it's time for a new car. I bought myself a z28 camaro when I turned 16 almost 5 years ago and it ran great until recently. I will need to put a few grand into it to get it running again, but even then it will have a 30+ year engine in it.
I'm currently driving a scion tc, which is a bit lacking as far as power goes.

I'm in the market for a new (to me) car now that I have been working at my new job and making enough money to afford something.
I've read a lot of the faq's and such about the A4's, and from what it seems for what I'd like to do my best option would be a 2000-2001 1.8t A4. I'm looking for something that I will be able to drive all year around, including snow which pretty much makes my camaro useless. I want something quick that I can put money into over time and it seems that the 1.8 is what I should be looking at. Currently looking at spending no more than $9k on the actual car, just to make sure that I have the needed money left in case of needed upkeep.

So when I go to look at these cars is there anything I should definitely take notice of when picking it out? I know for sure I want a manual since I've driven stick since I started driving and don't plan on giving that up.

Just make sure to get a trustworthy deal that comes with maintenance records and what not to show that the car has been taken car of. A big thing to look for is to be sure the whole timing system has been properly maintained (speaking from experience, i got shafted and my car blew up.) If you want the 1.8, from what I've seen you can get a really clean one for around 5k, which leaves 4k to play with. Good luck man.

Thanks a lot. As with buying any used car nowadays its pretty important to have paperwork!

I'd really like to buy a more stock car to begin with, as it would allow me to learn the in's and out's of the car as I was able to build it myself.

I would not recommend it.

I think the a4 is the cheapest audi built. Least amount of engineering.

Best to ya, what ever your decision.

Ps modded means abused.
Get the service recs.

A4 is cheapest Audi built - back in the b5 days - because it was the entry level it is the lowest level Audi you can buy. Nowadays they have the A3 which is a shrunken version of the A4. SHows you how good this 10+ year old car is considering people are still rolling in them dropping paychecks on them. People around the forum post about cars that had 795,000 miles on them. B5 will run forever no matter what level of quality there is. Even today the A4 with a few options is 40K, i believe you are paying for engineering and not crap.

What don't you recommend? Buying an A4 at all?
And yeah I've been reading a lot about buying already heavily modded cars which is why I said I'd probably buy a more stock car to start with.
