Default Q about Engine Swaps on the B5.

Hey guys,

I've been trying to figure out if there is an engine swap (without TOO much work) for my '97 A4 1.8T Q that would add some serious pep.

Also, does anyone know feasibility of boring my 1.8 into a 2L and price estimate as opposed to swapping to the newer 2.0t (if it fits etc.)?

I'm new to the car and any help is nice. Randomly fumbling through the internet gathering odd bits of info isn't getting me anywhere so I figured I would come here for help.

Thanks.

PS - I'm not looking to run out and do this just yet, I'm just gathering data.

From what I understand making it a 2l is a simple bore and stroke. I think you just put the 2.0 crank shaft in it with a light bore. Also the current engine is good for power and much cheaper then an engine swap. There is TONS of info on it just search a little more. I would bore and stroke it out and strengthen the internals while your at it if you wanted to go that way. That would allow for future high HP goals. You could also start with tuning and a little bigger turbo like a K04 I guess but I am not 100% sure what is done when you do that because I have a 2.8.

We offer 2 liter short block builds for just just under $3000 + freight shipping which is around $300-$400. I was one of the first A4 owners to go 2 liter and have been running it for 6 years now. If you have any questions about engine builds or getting power out of our A4's please feel free to PM, email or hit me up on Aim.

instead of doing an engine swap...I would say you would be better off starting with a turbo swap...maybe some internals and a good tune and you will be making some serious power

lol it's always the members with about 2 posts that ask the craziest questions. Not too much work on an engine swap? Most definitely not going to happen, and for the money and upgrades just sell your car and buy an S4.

Well the problem is that most of the noobs think going to a 2.7TT is going to make more power then a built 1.8t with the right turbo. What they need to search about is how hard it is to work on a S4, even the smallest work under the engine bay means you have to drop the engine out to do it.

that and the 2.7 has double of everything. instead of buying one turbo, you have to buy two (and, if bigger then k04s, figure out where to put them in that tiny space), 2 DVs, 2 wastegates, 2 heads to build, 2 additional pistons and rods to buy, etc.

i can have a 650hp A4 for the price of your 400hp S4, it may even work out to be cheaper, especially labor wise. not to mention ko4s run out of breath in the upper RPMs, and if you want bigger turbos, you will have some crazy lag running twin gt28s with only 1.35 liters of displacement driving them.

Yeah, you dont need to do an engine swap, the 1.8t is capable of lots of power with all the different upgrades available.
Probably, if you just start with a chip, you'll find 40 more hp is quite a big difference, and then you can take some time to research, save $$, and plan for big hp gains long term.
