Maybe this is a little extreme example, but you get my point.
I completely understand your point but I respectfully disagree. I believe the more illumination one has on their car the better, especially in foul weather (heavy rain/snow or fog).

There are far more dangerous situations I can point out that bother me, one being car with daytime running lights. How often have you seen a driver hop into his or her car and drive off believing their headlights are on. True the FRONT lights are lit to a degree, but there is no rear illumination what-so-ever. That is a safety issue. Especially late at night or in inclement weather. Would you agree?

Besides, those driving behind you should not be paying attention to your brake lights, they should be able to gauge your car with their peripheral vision. Instead they SHOULD be focused 2 or 3 cars ahead of yours.

I got to school and parked the car. Some girl ran up to the car as I locked it and told me my tail light was out. 10 minutes later as I was getting off the shuttle bus, my mom calls me to say the same thing. So I took a drive over to Pep Boys later that day and bought a pack of 7506 bulbs. I took the tail light assembly apart in the parking lot tried to find the burnt bulb...which ended up being none of them. However, when I turned on the rear fogs I noticed that only the driver's side one was lit. There was not even a socket where the passenger side bulb should go. Furthermore, there were small pieces of plastic blocking a 7506 sized bulb from fitting there.

Then I found this tonight:
B5 A4 99.5+: Dual Rear Fog Lights

So what gives? Am I just going crazy or did Audi only install one rear fog light? Doesn't make sense to me, unless they want to help the local precinct fund their next Christmas party with my tickets.
I live in Sweden and got 2 Audi A4 Turbo Quattros. Last night I was checking my wife's car after a long ride and found out the rear right fog light was OUT. I checked the bulb and changed with a new one without difference. Than I realised the uooer slot was empty but if you put a bulb there you can't fit the assembly. Then I searched the GOOGLE and found what you guys has described. I'll contact the Audi service but you're quite right about a single one (rear left) is on and it points on which lane the car is found in a snow storm which is rather normal here.

Left rear fog light indicates the left side of the vehicle which is the side you would normally pass on. So in Europe the left lane is only for passing another vehicle. Hence the driver's side rear foglight. Unlike here in the states.🤣🤣🤣

That is how ALL rear fog lights are. It must be a European thing. I think the reason they do that is so that people know that it is a fog light and not a brake light. People in the US just aren't used to them so they think a bulb is out. I would not use it on a regular basis because there is no need for it. The only time I use it is in extreme snow storms or very dense fog.
