Default Question about the torque converter

What mechanism/sensor tells the torque converter to lock in order to make the care go? I realize there may be a few things involved, but I want to know what components I need to check.

My car clunks and bumps pretty hard when I'm on and off the gas. I've already replaced the snub mount and transmission mounts. I've also replaced the rear diff mount with an Apikol mount.

I'm trying to determine if there is a problem with the torque converter, transmission or driveshaft....or MAYBE the other two motor mounts.

I'm just at a loss...been battling this for many months.

Don't know, but I can tell you that a clunk can also be caused by CV joints. And we have a lot of those in a quattro.

Yeah, CV axles are brand new too. And this is NOT a CV joint type of pop/clunk...something heavy is moving, or the torque converter is sticking.
