Default Quick gasket question?

I have an early 1998 a4 2.8l 30v motor and my oil pan and gasket needs to be replaced... Question is that my motor still has the same oil pan from the old 12v v6's... Is it gonna take the gasket from the 12v to? or the 30v engine?... Since they are considerably different?

can you take a picture of your engine? i have a 1998 audi a4 30v 2.8l and ive done a head gasket job. the kit for the 12v looks WAY different as you mentioned so i can let you know from my experience since we do have the same year car and engine.

btw, does that make us brothers?

**im pretty sure the 98 and up engines were 30v**

Talk to airguard350 about this - he ran into a unique issue on his car regarding this job.

If he mentions anything about JB Weld, disregard it.

Alright. It seems to me that early early '98 cars were 12v blocks with 30v heads. So here's what you can do: Go to Pep Boys or Advance (I don't care which you think is better so don't tell me) and buy maximum oil resistant RTV gasket maker. It's as easy as following the directions on the back, you don't have to buy an expensive $50 gasket like I did (d'oh!), and I know it works because Audi now only uses RTV gaskets on their engines. They no longer use traditional gaskets at all.

Do you mean the upper or lower gasket btw?

Doesn't really matter. He can use RTV for either; he just has to make sure he follows the lines of the original gasket.

Pat, if I may, on a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult would the replacement of the oil pan gasket be? I am looking to complete a bunch of maintenance needs and think if it is easy enough I'll do this as well.

Yea it's a early 2.8 30v engine with the AHA code... But it has the 12v oil pan like I mentioned before... The problem is though idk If it's supposed to take the 12 or the 30v gasket... I found the gaskets for under 20 bucks but I don't want to pull a dumb move and get the wrong one haha

His point is, don't buy a gasket - use RTV to seal the pan in place of a gasket. Then there's no wondering about having the right part. RTV is gasket in a tube.
