Default quick grinding sound at startup

The past two mornings when I start the car I hear a grinding sound when I start the car that lasts maybe less than a second. It doesn't sound like a slipping belt, it's more like something that's spinning and making metal to metal contact. I hope it's not the turbo. Could it maybe be a pulley or something? If I stop the car and start it again later in the day, it doesn't do it. I hope this is no big deal.

Do you just hear it when you are cranking the engine? Sounds like a starter maybe.

Lol, it wasn't "brand new", it just had 55k on it. My old turbo with 155k was also swapped over to this engine. I'm just getting frustrated because I thought I wouldn't have to worry about anything for a while. I'm also on the hunt for a couple of spots where there's a small oil leak.

Actually I just had the starter replaced too. It actually makes the sound right after the car turns over.

If you had the starter replaced, and it happens right after it starts cranking sounds like it could be the starter not retracting from the flywheel properly. I would get it checked out by whoever replaced it.

Those both sound like possibilities. If it keeps this up for the next few days, I'm going to give my mechanic a call. Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, that's a good idea. I'm going to try that tomorrow. Thanks.
