I just did both my rear bearings and calmingstorm has it right. your best bet is to either remove the spindle and take it to a shop for R&R, or pay someone to do the whole job. there's actually a bunch of write-ups on this around the various audi forums, if you'd bothered to search.

Removing the spindle and having a shop replace the bearing will be the least expensive route, and safest. You will have to deal with alignment issues after if you don't properly mark the camber bolt.

Good luck, Phil.

yes there should only be a bearing no inner or outer. since you are none quatro car it should be very wasy no pressing off and on jsut remove the wheel brake caliper rotor and dust sheild should slide right off and slide right on. they are talking about quatro cars which are a pain in the *** do do since you have to remove the hub since its pressed into the hub since you dont have that it should take you about an hour to do
good luck any questions just ask

I don't have money to dump either, I barely had enough to buy the bearing...and now I'm stuck with *more* of a bill than had I just had it done at a shop, because the upright is damaged.

I wasn't telling you don't do it, was venting and telling you how it can go very badly very quickly without a press.
I'm sorry you had such a tough time, but really.......what did you expect to happen? The right tool for the right job and knowing what exactly the job entails, ensures the job gets done correctly. Things do pop-up every now and again, but still, no reason to scare someone off doing the job themselves.

sorry.. must have missed the part in your post or (obnoxiously large) sig where you stated you have a FWD. most people have quattro so I was talking about the procedure for cars with quattro. also in case you hadn't noticed, google returns search results from other forums. here's a link for you:

usually it's a good idea to not be a smart *** when asking for help.

Roger that, thought you were Quattro, apologies. Your job will be a very easy DIY, no real guide needed.

And, to the above poster - I'd looked at a post on VWVortex which showed the guy having decent luck getting the bearing in/out without a press, It is entirely my fault and I take responsibility for it.

And, I got the bearing out finally via heating the entire assembly and using liquid C02 on the outer race to shrink it and hammer it out, upon hammering it out I ruined the spindle wall.

Good luck on the change Phil, won't be hard at all being FWD, Honestly thought I'd saw in a different post of yours, your car being quattro.

fight nice, kids.

Phil, here's the DIY i found when i was searching to do mine. I realize that its for a Quattro S4, but near as I can tell the process is very similar for a FWD. Good luck.

That links been posted already, in this thread - by me. And, I think we've come to the conclusion that FWD Vs Quattro is very different in terms of the rear bearing.
