remove axle assy
put it in a vise, tightly. Take the outer clamps off the boot
slide the boot away from the joint towards the vise, or cut it off to get it out of the way
grab the splined end with your hand and hit the outer cv with a hammer
it will dislodge from the inner circlip without you even knowing it, and slide off the shaft
Then you can turn the inner cv bearing wayyy sideways and that lets you remove the ***** and the cage. Inspect for pitting or heat marks. Clean, be plentiful with the grease and reassemble.

You will find it comes off the shaft pretty easy. There is not much force at all keeping it in place once it's out of the car. So you can get away with hitting it with a hammer without doing damage to the internal parts which are tough.
so your saying check the joint for any damage and go from there?

Yes, if you don't mind getting dirty, take a bit of extra time, about one hour I'd say, and want to save some money. Like another poster said, your joint is going to be in good shape.

You could just pull the joint off, slide the new boot on, fill that joint with grease and clamp it back up. Without checking the joint. But if you did take it apart and did find tiny pitting that would cause noise in the near future you'll be glad you took the extra time to inspect it while it was almost all apart.

So I ended up replacing both axles. Now I have the abs and ESP light on constantly. What do I have to do to get rid of them? I am going to take a closer look this weekend and see if there sensor or something that I missed.

Thanks

When you swapped out the axles did you mess with the ABS sensors at all? And did you check to see that the new axles had ABS rings on them? (they normally do)

Often times this sort of thing is the result of ABS sensors which are not pushed in far enough.

Yes I did disconnect the sensor but I connected it in all the way. I will be takin it apart again and make sure it's clean inside from any grease or anything like that. The rings were on there so I don't thing that's it.

I'll do that and let you guys know what happens
Anyone in socal have an abs scanner let me know

Thanks

f you take it to a shop it actually costs about the same. If the boot is ripped then you probably have grime and water entering the joint and it may be wearing out.

Right down theRoad from you in costa Mesa. I took it to my mechanic but he did not have a abs scanner. Let me know if you have some time to do that

yea I replaced the entire axle instead of just the boot. The old boot was torn so there was grease everywhere in the tire well and behind the disk on everywhere I tried cleaning things in there but still have some left that might be messing with the abs

I can make time pretty much any day after 4pm. I usually take the 55 and exit Victoria.
