Resetting your new ( but used ) instrument cluster
Ok.. my gauges were not working when i turned my car on the other day ( speed , tach , gas , miles ect.. ) so i had to buy a new cluster. After getting some prices (800$) just for the part alone i searched ebay and found some used ones. I suggest you guys do the same when you need to replace yours because i got mine for 90 bucks and it looks/works perfect and its the easiest fix possible. Now , my question is it now says i have 120k miles and i should have only 106k , my guess is the 120k is the miles of the car it came in and its stored in the cluster , am i right about this? Also , how am i going to reset my new cluster to read the original miles on my car. thanks in advance
Having studied the issue, I can say that you must check with the laws in your state. Providing you do not "misrepresent" the mileage versus the actual mileage, you will be fine. Looking on your vehicle title is a good starting point. Normally, there will be boxes to check for "actual" mileage and "not actual" mileage. It is permissible to check either box upon transfer. If, for whatever reason you check "not actual", you are free from any problem. Of course, if you never transfer the car you are always immune.
There are several reasons when it is permissible to have "not actual" mileage. Fully rebuilt engine and transmission, etc. Maybe someone can list more of them here later.
As far as the technical issue goes, maybe someone else can post how to do it. I know you can easily, with 2 screws get behind the cluster. I have not tried unplugging the plug that feeds the odometer. Any ideas on how to reprogram the mileage?

Lorence. Vag-Com is the interface that all VW vehicles(VW, Audi, Scoda, etc.) use to diagnose problems within the cars ECU. When you get a check engine light, it's how you would pull the codes from the computer and a short description of each code. Also, you can use Vag-Com to change certain settings in the car, anything from how the doors lock/unlock to the idle speed rate. It's a nifty little piece of equipment, and very handy to have if you own an audi.
