Default Self Resetting cluster

Over the past few months my cluster has been resetting itself, for a moment, everything would go to off mode and then go back to the correct readings (speed, rpm, coolant temp, etc. ) This happens about once a month. My trip always gets reset as well. I'm afraid to chip my car as I fear I may complicate the issue. Any ideas or has anyone had this before?

It happened again today, my fuel gauge read at 1/4 when I had just a bit below 3/4, took a long time to get the fuel reading right, but the tach's and what not reset quickly. This happened shortly after running my car hard, full acceleration to 80. I repeated the hard accel later in the day and nothing happened so I doubt it has anything to do with how hard I run the engine.

Replace the instrument cluster. Its the only componet in the car that can make every gauge go south at the same time, happens a lot more with TT cars though.

Wont that kill my mileage?

How much does a new cluster go for?
