Reverse lights on when the car is driving

I've got a '98 Audi A4 Quattro Avant that seems to have an intermittent issue. Some times when the car is in drive the backup/reverse lights are on. Any idea what could be causing this?

Auto.

I found that if I shift down to 4 they go out. I'm thinking it's a switch somewhere

There's a multiple function switch that controls that sort of thing I believe.

Is that something a layman can do, or would it be better to take it to a garage? Any idea what the part # may be?

I think it would be simple enough if that was the cause, search around the forums for it and make a judgement call. I could always be wrong, maybe one of the gurus can chime in
