What year is the A4? B5 A4's use the same turbos as a B5 S4, its just the A4 only has one where-as the S4 has two. Yes, it could be used to replace it. But, if you're going through that much trouble you should either get a K04 from an RS4 or something similar. Anything EXCEPT the K03 which are stock on A4/S4's. And also, look online for one, don't go to the dealer to buy it. There is a ton of websites to get the right stuff for a lot cheaper then dealer pricing.

From what I've read, the S4 turbo is not a direct replacement - you'll have to modify it somehow to make it work, and I think it's more than just clocking the housing.

from the sounds of it and personal experience it sounds like a wastegate actuator.

the turbo itself will make a really bad noise, like a dentist drill, when its going bad (ideally) a lot of the times you cant buy the actuator brand new separately however you can get one from a partout or junkyard.

id just replace it with a ko4 like previously mentioned, its a tad bigger with more aggressive fins. i think good for another 30HP or so.

Like anything, search online. Prices will vary. Search and FAQ sticky will give you the 411 on using a k04. If that whine you're talking about is when the engine is cold, it's the SAP. I'm betting the whine stops atvtge same time you drop from high idle to normal idle.

To fix the SAP requires replacement - when it makes that sound it's shot. You'll have to pull the front of the car to change it.
