Would like to go with MT-85 for front/center (and 75W-90 rear).
But only find MTL on FCP. Not even the MT-90 (the MT-85 I think is newer, ends up to similar to the mix of MTL and MT-95).

Amazon seems to have both.

So 3 quarts for front center, 2 quarts rear?

Bentley is (as usual) a bit 'mystic' about the quantities

Yes, 3 quarts for the manual transaxle and 2 quarts for the rear. I'm running straight MTL for the transaxle and 75w90 synthetic gear oil in the rear diff. I went with MTL as the car is only street driven and I didn't want it to get too stiff at colder temperatures.

 

I may try that for my 2002 Allroad. It was virtually impossible to get gears in (I suspect worn synchros) in winter. I put in a mix of Synchromesh (Penzoil) and some (forgot the viscosity) regular synthetic gear oil, plus added some Lubro Moly (MoS20). Shift improved immediately. Now in summer, no issues at all. Trying to stretch the inevitable gear box repair for a bit longer. May straight MTL (I would add again some Moly) will be even better?

The A4 had no shifting issues, so I would mix Mt-90 with MTL, or get the MT-85 (for cold MI winters).

If it seems that the problem is only during cold weather, I would just run the straight MTL. It is only slightly thinner than the OEM oil and makes it shift like butter. At colder temps, I had difficulty getting into second. Now it's like it "wants" to shift. Just slides in. I'm sold on the MTL.

I'm not sure about the volume required by the allroad, but I would assume it is similar. When filling the transaxle, I found it useful to run a hose up into the engine bay with a funnel.

I'm not sure on the Passat FWD, but the auto A4 will have a separate fill for the center diff (tail housing of the transmission) and the front diff. I'm not sure of the volumes for each.

One last thing to be aware of is type of oil. Some people have reported having transmission trouble when running GL5 oils. The car was designed for GL4 and allegedly the GL5 can be damaging to the yellow metals used for syncros.

i have the 17mm allen if you need it. You probably have it since its the same that takes off front axels

 

Don't forget the 16mm triple square "tamper proof" for the drain on the transmission.

I've got Redline MT90 in the tranny and 75w90 Redline gear oil in the rear diff.

 

I got my drain plug socket from FCP along with the Redline oil.
