Default "In Service" on board display

Hi guys, probably a stupid question. I have Audi A4 2.5TDI V6. I've brought the car to Audi services for the normal maintenance. When they gave me the car back the "In Service" check was showing 15.000km. I was driving a lot , like 2.500, 3.000km and I checked again the on-board "In Service" information and it was showing me 16.900 then after few rides like the last one now I have information of 21.000km ...I dont understand how is it calculating it? Is this information that it showing me , means... that I should put the car in services after those KM? and If so , why they are growing and not going down , I dont understand? From Audi services , they explained me that is some kind of calculation but because they didnt speak english , which was strange ) I didnt understand correctly what the guy mean

Thanks a lot for the help to all!!!

Not sure on the year but I'm guess the "Service" is when you start the car?! The KM is just a trip odometer. I use mine to keep track of miles between getting fuel. Does that make sense?

at the board where the KMrs are and the RPMs there are two small black round buttons, when you press the right one you clear the current KMs and make them to Zero. The Left one is doing at my car two functions.
1. is when you press it and hold it for few moments its showing you in the red display

- Service In - 15.000KM (for example)

2. is when you press it twice , then its make a self test - oil, handbreak, water, fuel and etc.

I am asking about this "Service IN" ...when I took it from the service it was 15.000 but now is 21.000. Im just curious , how the calculation is done. By my logic these 15.000KM should go down and then you put it into service (to change, oil , filters and blqblq ) but instead they go Up. )

..sorry, the year is 2001, 01
