Service Indicators not moving

Service Indicators not moving
Hi All - I've just bought my first Audi, A4 Sline 1.8T 2004.
Its a lovely car - except I bought it from a Mercedes dealership and they are telling my things which arent making sense to me - so thought I would ask the people in the know.
When I got the car, I hit the wrench button - and it said SERVICE! so I took it back asking them to sort it out.
I got the car back for about a week and now it displays(hasnt moved):
DAYS:-- --
KM:-- --
I believe Audi put these in for a reason (to advise you when to put the car in) but the dealership has told me that these will not show any information, only the word INSPECTION when the time is right.
Logically this doesnt make sense to me, but I dont know the car so please can someone help me out here? Thanks!
