Do you sand in between coats or at the end? Thanks.

I sanded in between coats then buffed it for a nice smooth glossy finish.

So i went to get the vinyl paint from advanced auto and the guy was like you should use primer too which i wasnt going to. I said fine and grabbed it. Put a few coats and went to wet sand before vinyl coat and it started coming off. I guess thats my bad since you guys didnt mention primer but i hate when people like him pretend they know what theyre talking about and fsu. Anywsy no biggie ill just sand it all over again and use just vinyl.

Primer is used for paint to adhere on. If you put primer on then sanded it off, yes the paint won't stick. I didn't use primer because sanding it made enough rough texture for the paint to stick on.

This is a good practice and lesson for you on painting. Keep at it.

Oh ya i cant paint but I thought i was supposed to smooth the primer (it was rough) before applying the finish coat? It says on the can of primer "sandable". Or you only sand final paint not primer? Also there are some nicks in the piece kind of deep to sand out. I was hoping the primer would help fill it. If i just put several coats of vinyl and kerp sanding might the defects not be visible?

you shouldn't of used primer necessarily but plastic adhesion first. what grit are you using? wet sanding or dry? you sand final coat before clear not the final final coat but you sand every coat in between.
