Honestly, any engines available to the US market would be fine as long as there are paper works.
Anything can be done with decent amount of work. There's a thread somewhere here where someone swapped a V8 engine into a B5 A4.

I was under the impression there were limits to what motors you can swap into a given car and be able to legally run it on the street. Although i suppose if you did a good enough job, no one would know the difference anyway, 'cept maybe the guy doing the smog inspection?
there are no restrictions that i know of, you just need proper documentation... like going to the highway patrol and the dmv
and what motor to swap in is dependent on what you want out of the car and your budget

Its mostly due to emissions that i know of. But appearantly in SoCal there are, something about getting your car crushed if you dont have a legal engine swap? iunno, most likely untrue >.<;
