Started tuning for e85 :)
So I started tuning for e-85 today. left about 1/4 tank of gas in and put about 1/2 tank of e-85 in to adjust a/f. Boy what a difference! Kinda nice. I know I'm pushing the rods now. So my 2.0 project will be some time next year. It is nice to use lemmingwinks and a cheap obd2 dongle to tune the unitronic file better. of course with the help of vag-com because I haven't made it to a dyno yet. I'll keep you guys posted how the tuning is going. So far I keep a 11.5 w/ e-85 on 640cc injectors at ~21 psi on a gt3076r with 1.5 degree timing advance from unitronics bt stock tune.
I have access to a flow bench and I will be flowing the head for the best possible. As for parts, got some things picked out from 034 motorsports and I'm planning on running between 30-35 psi when I do get to the engine build. Along with a stand alone ecu. Tell you what, just doing what I did now, the car screems. I stayed with a lexus that had a 70 trim turbo of some sort and dynoed at 420whp from a 40 roll to about 140, then he started to pull a little on me till we both hit about 160. That was interesting.
At 160 I ran outta gear and engine. Someone did video tape that race. I'll get it and post it somewhere for you guys to watch.
along with other video of that nigh. Their making a dvd or something. I get a copy for being in it

e-85 is 104 octane and burns cleaner and faster. It takes ~%30 more fuel to get the same a/f ratio's as gas. The more octane rating the more you can adjust timing as well without as much knock because of the octane rating. Any tuner know that the closer you can get to tdc (top dead center) the more power and torque you will make. Make sense? If you decide to do this you need to most likely increase injector size depending on what your running know and how much it is tuned. I found out that unitronics bt 640cc file was only running my injectors at about %61 at wot in full boost at 7200 rpm with 1.5 degrees added of timing at an 11.5 a/f. So I have the head room to increase the injectors. It is a good rule of thumb to not go past 80%-85% on the injector duty cycle. I might be pushing it. I haven't drove the car the rest of the afternoon to find out. If my math is right I should be at around ~87% duty. Whitch I'm sure will be fine.
Well, I haven't started tuning or anything yet. Other than the exhaust, which I had to replace because the old one was destroyed avoid a lady on her cell phone up in NY, my car is bone stock. I plan to start collecting parts over the next several months while I'm deployed and building my car once I get back.
So, the question is, is there a big difference in the price of e85 and regular 91/93 octane, would you suggest e85 for a daily driver, or do you think I should just stay with a normal tune?
You're saying it takes about 30% more e85 to maintain the a/f ratios? This alone makes it sound like it is solely for racing, not really good for a DD.
Thanks for your input...

That's a give or take thing. I think it is along with preference. I wan't more power so I'm going to go with e-85. Daily driver----depends on how you want to drive. For fuel economy, e-85 here in colorado springs is about ~$2.05 a gallon. 91 is about ~$2.70+ a gallon. So it might equal out. Remember you got to tune for it as well. As far as I know their is no tune for our cars on e-85. < Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I promise you will feel a hp difference with 104 octane compared to pump gas.
Your sig says looking to make 300+hp dd, what do you plan on doing? you want that at the wheels or the engine?

I'm not exactly sure, and I don't know how much the car looses in the drivetrain. My goal is about 300-350 HP. I want to have a decent amount of lower end torque to get the thing up an moving, and I know I need to sacrifice some top end to do that. I don't plan on taking the car to the strip at all, just have a really fun and quick car to drive around.
As for a turbo, I'm trying to decide if I want to go with a GT2871r elim with high flow exhaust manifold (stealthy/ stock looking) or a regular GT2871r with a full racing exhaust manifold. I know the real 2871 will give me a little more power, but the manifold itself is about another thousand buck. But, if I wanted to upgrade in the future, I wouldn't need to replace the mani again. Mike Hood is the one that suggested the 2871. I'm sure with a proper tune and stuff, it is capable of up to about 400HP. But I really don't want too much power because then it just becomes a pain to drive, and when you're trying to make that much power, you need to drive at WOT. I don't plan on driving like that, except at the occasional light when some college kid with his ricer thinks he's hot ****.
Anyway, when it comes down to it, I think the elim will be enough to quench my tuning thirst, with 440cc injectors, proper ecu tune, clutch, brakes and suspension, I'll have a fun little DD.

The eliminator setup will do you just fine. Sounds like you got a good plan.
