Vehicle: A4 2.8 quattro Mileage: 115,XXX Year:1998

Symptoms: Occasionally, no start- turn key, nothing- idiot lights, gauges go up (fuel, etc), but no turn over. Ignition switch replaced, starter rebuilt two years ago. This morning, I hit the key, it somewhat engaged, but didn't turn over. Turned key off, it took six or so tries, and it started.

Neutral start switch?

 

The problem is that you are not saying "Engage" in a Patrick Stewart voice first.

 

I wouldnt say its the neutral start switch if it "somewhat" engaged at one point, I would check wiring and grounds. Hit the starter with a mallet or stick or something and see if it makes it better.

 

In all seriousness, it could also be the starter solenoid (probably not this time though) or it could be a loose battery connection or partially corroded wires or something like that.
