Default Steaming radiator = tstat problem?

about a week ago after a 30-40 minute drive on a day about 30degrees i noticed what looked like steam from my engine compartment. FYI - the road was also wet this day.

I popped the hood and it looked like the passenger half of my radiator was steaming. I still had plenty of g12/h20 in the reservoir and there were no apparent leaks.

Also, lately I've noticed that my coolant temp goes up awefully fast. This morning it was about 35deg and after about 10 minutes of in town driving my temp needle was pointing straight up (middle position). I've never observed it before it seemed kind of fast to me. After a bout 5 of the 10 minutes I was stopped at a light and could actually SEE the needle moving to the center position. When it got there it stopped dead center and didn't move.

Any ideas as to what's going on here? I had the timing done at a shop i trust about 40k miles ago.

Thanks in advance-
Savan
