stock internals and tranny strength ?'s
So I've been searching around on here and found most of the info i need but just wanna make sure i have the right idea. I have a 99 1.8t a4 and i'm wondering how much power can the stock motor hold? It seems the general consensus is 350tq. My goal is to make 300whp so im hoping id be alright. I wanna run the GTRS setup i believe. Also how much power can the stock tiptronic tranny hold? From searching it seems like once you get up above 300 near 400 thats where problems could occur, is this correct? Last question is i've heard the giac tiptronic chip allows for high torque levels not just decreases shift delay, is this true? So basically will my stock parts hold up to 300whp with a GTRS setup?
Your stock internals should be fine up to somewhere around 400-450hp. If you are planning on more than that, you'll want to upgrade.
from what i can recall you're tranny wont hold that power. you need a 5 speed with a better than stock clutch to hold the power. I think a k04 is about as big as you want to go with an automatic, although if someone has more power than that, with a auto tranny, please chime in with your experience. I dont know much about the auto's.

Not exactly the conclusive answer you were looking for. Mike@DTH would prob be a good resource for questions about internals.

horsepower doesnt break rods, torque does. and around 300-350 ft lb of torque is their limit. a GTRS should be fine but just make sure you set it up so the torque curve is as smooth as possible. if you have some hard spikes you could break a rod. people have done it before with a GTRS. sometimes running a larger turbo with a little more lag is better because the power comes on more gradually.
a chip wont physically allow your trans to hold more power, its just software. you should be ok to run that turbo on an automatic, people have run larger turbos on the tip tranny. its obviously not ideal but it should work. make sure you change your fluid regularly.

gtrs setup is fine for an auto tranny and stock internals. someone on AZ is running a 3071r setup on a tip. tip chip will just decrease the shift time, not really make it any stronger. lvl 10 has a complete internals kit for 1500, (or 1k for just the valve body) and another grand if you want a better tq converter. but you don't need it for a street car w/ a gtrs. i would get the tip chip tho
You should be fine, we just put down 360awhp running a GT2871r Elim at 30+psi on a stock bottom end B6 and those have the 19mm wrist pin while your car has the 20mm. Ghost is correct, it is not peak hp that snaps rods. That tends to happen by trying to run way too much adv timing when peak tq happens which also tends to be where the turbo hits peak boost really quickly. Tuners tend to soften the adv timing right at peak tq and then increase it again to help make more hp.
So the people that say they snapped a rod because they were making way too much power are pretty much wrong about the reason it did snap.
