Taken for a Ride by the dealer?
Hey all, Newbie here.
3rd owner for this car, the first one installed the GIAC on it.
The 2nd owner bought the car at 60K miles and the seller (dealer)
had the Tb/tensioner, camshaft seal and water pump replaced.
It is due for 90K service, the dealer is telling me the Ribbed Belt
needs to be replaced now.
Do you guys agree with that?
Is there a chance the ribbed belt was replaced along with the
Timing belt at the 60K?
Your advice would be very much appreciated.
Quattro Avant no ground effects.

A decent garage should have known to replace the V-belt when the timing belt and all that jive was done, but thats no guarantee that it was done. A new belt is pretty cheap and there's not much labor involved, so you may as well change it even if it doesn't need to be changed. What else do they want you to pay for in this 90k service?

Hello Guys,
thanks, CCA4, Mr.Phil, hiwords
for the quick reply.
The work by the dealer was done 3 years ago,
I will try to get the info from them.
I paid $5500 for the car but it needs body work
on the drivers fender and the seat is torn.
For the 90K service they want $700, to change
the ribbed belt and the spark plugs.
Should I look for another shop?

700 to change the belt and plugs is way too much. honestly, even if you don't know anything about cars, you can change the spark plugs yourself. all you'd need to do is go to the parts store, buy the plugs, a spark plug socket and a ratchet and you're good to go. as for the belt, it's 35 bux for the belt and it only takes 10 minutes to change. they are seriously jerking you around. i'd find another shop asap
once again i agree with hiwords, $700 for that work is robbery. I paid less than that to have my timing belt, water pump, tensioner, pulleys, cam seals, and serp. belt done. Also, $5500 for a 2000 that needs that work and body work seems a bit high to me, but maybe i'm just cheap lol
Much appreciate it guys,
I have asked the Dealer for a full explanation
if they would replace
- the Break Fluid
- V belt
and check the Trans Final Drive lubricant.
I did inherit the Bentley Manual with the car, so I have
an idea what needs to be done.
I will let you know the response by Monday.
Happy New Year to all in the meantime.
