It's definitely possible to do that, it's just that ECU is so old and dated that nobody really cares about it anymore. Added to that, there isn't nearly as much documentation and information about it, compared to the newer ME7. There are tuners that could tune it, but the majority won't because it's just not worth their time.

 

So, in other words, it can be done, but its just too expensive to do it? Any idea what it cost to upgrade the ECU?
