Default Is there help out ther for my A4

Hello to all the people on here with great taste in driving an Audi.
I have just got my first but by no means last Audi.
But well it came with a slight problem (I hope slight)
The car runs rough when it starts from cold and has a slight hesitation under accelaration, the eml light is on as well.
The reason I am asking the good people here is I dont want to be taken to the cleaners by the dealer and not have an idea when I go to them.

The car is a 2001 a4 1.8 20v non turbo petrol 100,145mls
Any and all help is greatly appricated.

Thank you

Hello Steve, and welcome aboard!

One of the possibilities for this behavior could be that the coolant temperature sensor is bad, causing the ECU to flood the engine with too much fuel. Is there blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe when it's cold?

It's worth a shot to replace this part, since it's cheap. This sensor is known to go bad and exhibits all kinds of strange behavior.

Have the plugs been changed in the last 40,000 miles or so?

Does the car run well when it's at operating temp?

Thank you for the tips.
Now that you mention the coolant temperture sensor. It takes at least 20 mins for the temp to come up on the dash when driving. It runs nearly ok when warm just a little hesitant on acceleration. Realy appricate the tip on this. Us boys accross the water need proper engines in our Audi not 1.6/1.8 etc.

I learnt something new because i thought the 2.8 was the non turbo version. all the 1.8 I've seen we're turbo. Didnt know they made them non turbo.

It takes a longer than usual time for my engine to warm on a cold start also so I guess I'll be looking into changing my sensor

Scan for codes first. Could be the sensor but also with 20 min warmup times there may be a thermostat issue. Get the codes scanned and post them here and we can help more.
