Default timing belt DIY? Anyone?

Does anyone have a good writeup for a timing belt change for a 2.8/12V/1997/128K miles? I saw the one for the 1.8... couldn't find one for the 2.8...

Also, what are other somethings I should do when I change the TB? I've read the cam tensioner too? What else?... maybe the water pump? I don't want to have to take everything apart again because I forgot to change something, you know?...

I've read some of the evil things that've happened to some cars in here, so I want to do what I can in preventative maintenance...

I haven't seen a DIY for the 2.8 but it's in the Haynes manual if that helps - you can pick up one of those and that'll help you out with it. As for what else to change, best thing is to go to PureMS.com or ECSTuning.com and order a complete timing belt kit. It should come with what you need to do the complete service (t-belt, water pump, tensioner, seals, etc). Not a bad idea to also do accessory belt(s), plugs, filters, tire rotation, etc as well - the t-belt service is usually the big one where you change everything.

Haynes manual only covers the 30v DOHC engine - not the 12v SOHC engine. I'd think your best bet is a Bentley manual.

Good info, and yeah I should've known that (I have the Haynes for my 30v). Bentley manual is worth the price for sure.

Yeah my dad got me a Haynes manual a while back just for the helluvit, and I was totally stoked until I realized it didn't cover my engine specifically... still a very handy book to have around, though. Combined with the tech info on 12v.orgI can usually figure stuff out pretty well.

Check out the procedure for the A6 2.7T. It's not an exact writeup (as there is some extra plumbing for the turbo system), but it's otherwise pretty similar to the 2.8, or at least the 2.8 30V.

Other things to do at the belt-change: Cam Tensioner, both the tensioner and static pulley, water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, serpentine belt tensioner (optional). You might need to do the front cam-seals as well. Blauparts has kits available with everything listed above (except the cam and serpentine belt tensioners), as well as toolkits and instructions.

It's an involved job, but nothing that can't be done over a weekend. One tool you're going to want to have is a set of socketed allen keys. While you can do the job with regular allen keys, the socketed set makes life a hell of a lot easier.
