Default Transmission fluid and filter replacement question

I've searched, and can't find a good answer.

I *thought* I read somewhere that on 1.8T Quattro Tips that in order to replace the transmission filter that you have to raise the engine a bit.

Is this true?

I ask because last night, I noticed my tranny making a little bit of noise when I was coming into my neighborhood. I was rolling down a slight hill so I wasn't on the gas, and I heard a peculiar sound. I pulled into my garage and shifted to P, then back to D. When it's in D, I hear this noise, and unfortunately I can't really explain what it sounds like.

I bought the car in October 08 with 121K miles. It now has 130K and I don't know what the transmission fluid is like.

I am pretty capable of working on my car, so I want to know what I'm getting into by wanting to change the filter and fluid.

i thought the auto just has a pan like all the other auto cars and you just take it off and the filter is sitting right there? take a quick peak under your car. i know for a fact onepoint8tee knows but who knows where he's been
