A bit difficult to say for sure based on that description, but its possible. "Syncro" is short for synchronizers, they're sorta like lil gates that keep you from shifting like a dipshit, say from 5th to 1st or something, while the car is moving. They do wear out. In addition to the noise you're hearing, is it harder to get the shifter into 1st than the other gears?

1st and 2nd gear synchros wear out often. especially from people trying to downshift from 2 to 1 while the car is still in motion. without anymore information thats all that i can tell you. you can try flushing the trans fluid.

ok . so shifting in to 1st its not hard at all , every shift into gears are very smooth , now whats the cost of replacing the syncros, or do i have to replace the trans?

it would be cheaper and easier to replace the whole thing. new synchros will cost about as much as a good used trans will ($400-8000) let alone installation costs. i certainly wouldnt be thinking about replacing a transmission if the only symptom is a rattle.

the rattle sounds like a motor that needs the main bearing replaced but its not the motor, thats what a mechanic said , so what would be the best thing to do ??

I have the same thing going on with my 1999 A4 2.8 whats the possibility of damaging the gearbox further if i just keep driving with my synchros fucked? lemme know because I don't got a whole lotta money at the moment and would like an easy fix if possible.

typically with our cars, there is no such thing as an "easy fix"

This is not a syncro issue, it is apparently a chip in a tooth in the actual first gear that causes this problem. As you can see by the number of complaints about this, it is a fairly common problem with these cars although Audi doesn't recognize it as such. I've been told that first gear is an assembly that includes reverse but that the labor required to do this job is basically cost prohibative. I'm searching for more info myself on this issue. You really cannot even trade the car in with this noise because when they hear that noise they'll immediately tell you your car isn't worth anything.
