Question transmission- no second gear

i may have posted this before, but i cant find the post for the life of me.
a few months ago, i had a 6k shift in my 2.8 12v go awry.
i can shift into second gear and it will stay in on a downshift but as soon as i hit the throttle, it immediately pops out. ive been just skipping 2nd on upshifts, going from 1st to 3rd, no problem.
anyone know what i did? i can say that i might not have pushed the clutch in all the way on that fateful shift. is it a bent or broken synchro? and how would i fix it? do i have to yank the motor or can i just drop the trans or is it something i can correct from tearing down the center console, in the gearbox?

If I understand you correctly, the gearbox goes into the neutral position on acceleration. With that being the case, this usually indicates a worn blocker/synchroniser ring, which can only be repaired by removing the gearbox and disassembling for replacement of the worn parts.

Have you drained the lubricant and checked for any 'gold' metal particles? If they are present, you most likely have a worn blocker/synchroniser ring(s) on that gear.

i havent drained it yet. i was going to order the tool to do so next week. ive been driving it on and off and it still shifts relatively smooth. and yes, it pops out of second gear into the neutral position on acceleration. is it something where i gotta drop the trans out? or can i do it from inside the car, if thats what the broken part is? i dont know much about transmissions

To replace the blocker/synchroniser rings, the gearbox must me removed from the car and disassembled. There are several specialised tools that are used in the disassembly/reassembly, so if you are not familiar with the procedures, it may be best to either exchange the gearbox for a used unit, or have the present gearbox overhauled by a competent repair shop.

This is something the tranny needs to be disassembled for, and no, you cant access anything from the top or side. It needs to be fully removed to make this repair.

Hands down you are better off buying a used tranny. If you were to fix it, the parts alone would cost that of a used tranny.

Well, the reason my tranny failed in the first place was do to my own human error. I half expected to buy a used trans anyway, and priced one out from a junk yard a few months ago at 500$. But my buddy totaled his 98 supercharged 30v a while ago, and he's looking for a shell or cheap roller to swap his setup into... Would the trans out of a 30v v6 be compatible with my 12v?

What if his car blows up? What if the North Koreans invade and steal his car? What if the world ends? Slippery slope is slippery

A 30v tranny would hook up but I am pretty sure the gears are different.

If you search the forum archive, there is a list of parts needed to convert the gearbox from the 5-speed to the 6-speed found in the later S4 variant.
