Default Transmission problem with my A4

Yesterday I was driving and all of the sudden it sounded like I was dragging something so I pulled over. There was a wire like thing hanging under the center of the car. It is almost 1/8" thick but is stiff like a coat hanger. I tied it up out of the way so I could drive home. As soon as I started driving, I realized I could not shift into 2nd. I had the car towed to the shop but they don't open until monday. Any ideas what that could be? The car is a 2001 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro manual.

Also, I had the car into the shop the day before to have the a/c recharged. It seems a little coincidental that my car breaks down the next day after I get it back. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for any help or advice
