Unhappy Turbo Problem

installed Turbo and now I'm getting A really High Piched whine and does not seem to be producing any boost. Any ideas what it could be? Just installed new breather tube parts and a new puck valve. turbo is is pretty good shape. no wiggle in the shaft, turbo is out of a 2000 a-4 1.8t. is put on my 98 1.8t. {PLEAZE HELP}

Um, hard to say off that description... have you gotten a CEL? Does your car stall when you try to boost while driving?

You should probably take it to a shop. If you're losing airflow, I'm guessing it's somewhere between your turbo inlet/IC piping and throttle body. Check for leaks maybe? If you're not boosting at all, I'm guessing it's your turbo. And fixing those is not a DIY project.

No CEL. the turbo only had 50k on it. its a real high whine, (a loud spool) I've never heard anything like that before.

a turbo that sounds like a dentist drill is a turbo that is dying. it could possibly be from reused oil/coolant lines that have sludge in them and not enough oil/coolant is getting to the turbo.

do you have a boost gauge so you can KNOW its not producing any boost? it could just be in limp mode and its producing so little boost your butt dyno cant tell.

also i agree you should do a quick leak check. search for "tennis ball method"

the original turbo was in really bad shape and didnt make that noise. could I have hooked up some of the hoses incorrect and that would make that noise? how do you get it out if limp mode?

to get it out you have to first figure out why it is in limp mode in the first place, and if it is even in limp mode at all. you can have anyone with vag-com software or a dealer reset it for you. i think even the autozone scanner will work if you clear the codes with it but im not positive.

the dentist drill sound isnt a definitive diagnosis but a rule of thumb. if it sounds like a dentists drill, more then likely its on its way out.

if somehow you managed to mix up the oil feed/return lines im not quite sure what would happen although it might be the case. my bet is that you reused the oil lines and the old ones were full of crud like plaque on your arteries. if a piece of plaque breaks off and blocks the flow, you have a heart attack- or you kill your turbo.

also alot of people like to crank the engine over for like 20 seconds with the spark plugs disconnected so that the oil will circulate into the lines. you are supposed to have full oil pressure to the turbo within a few seconds of starting the engine. if the oil lines are empty it can take 10-20 seconds which is very bad for it.

even if your not upgrading the turbo, just replacing it, always-always replace the oil and coolant lines. after 5 minuits of hard driving the turbo will be cherry red. if you turn it off before it has time to cool the oil that is in the turbo/lines will burn. this causes sludge. do that over and over again for 10 years and guess what your oil supply lines will look like. even worse is that sludge can travel down into the engine, get stuck in the oil pickup tube and good bye engine. the 1.8Ts are notorious for this.

you could even try a seafoam treatment, that would break up atleast some of the crap thats in there and maybe help the oil flow a little better.

Do you have a boost gauge? I bet you have a bad boost leak and the noise you are hearing is from the extra air escaping.

actually I did reuse the oil return lines. but I did clean them out and there was no oil restriction in them. And actually the origional turbo was not in bad shape exept for the exhaust piece inside of the turbo houseing was blown off!(the lil flap inside that connects to the pressure valve. but I started tearring everinthing down, and when I was under the car I looked at the diverter valve,(?blow off valve) and it has a long hose connected to it. now, Im not sure if it was connected to anything cause theere was no clamp around it. now could that be the cause of the problem? also where does that connect to. What I am basically doing is, taking everything back apart and cecking everything as I put it back together. would anyone know if there is a blow up illistration for the turbo hoses and such? my book does not have one. Im doing all the work I can myself cause was almost take to the cleaners by the Stealership. tried to charge me thousands to fix, and didnt even take care of the problem I broght it in for.

thanx ghost6303. taking turbo off now. when I drained the oil, it had paricles in it. so I will, sea foam it after everthing is put back together. is there any way I can Check the turbo after I get it off for wear? I've had it on for a lil while and It does not smoke.(the old one smoked really bad) It just whines alot. If I clean the old lines out will it last a lil bit? ( car is just for work and back) I just dont want to put alot of money into it. when I pulled the valve cover there not alot of sludge build up. I had the Lifters replaced by the stealership. Cams looked fine. The only other problem I have is the ticking from the cam chain tentioner. But for $600 it can keep on ticking.
