Turbo Problem
If the shaft inside the turbo moves side to side, or in and out at all, thats not good. if its just a tiny wobble, you can live with it, but it will eventualy get worse. if you dont push it it will obviously last longer then if you beat on it. If you can move it a alot, it might be too far gone. If the shaft vibrates too much it can fail, and at 120,000 RPMs, thats not fun.
Just clean it all out very well. Flush the lines with cleaner and then blow them out with some compressed air. after everything is together start the car as i explained earlier to get the oil flowing. Then do a full seafoam and oil change. That might just work.

I did check the shaft for play and it was good. the turbo looked almost brand new. the only think that was different on this turbo was that the turbo fins were not exposed. they were covered by a plastic shield and it is shaped like a cone. but it did come off of a newer audi I think it was a 2000? so I really dont know if that would matter. you mentioned cleaning it out. are you meanning the turbo itself? if so, what would be a good method of cleaning it. soory for all the ?'s but this is my first turbo car. Learning as I go along!!
plastic? there should be no plastic in any part of a turbo, they get to above 1000F degrees. any plastic that was in there would be long gone by now.
I meant clean out the lines very well, you cant easily flush out the turbo. You could maybe try and inject some oil in there so it has some lubrication at startup. both those cars use the same exact turbo so it shouldnt matter.

when I get it off ill snap a picture. was there a difference it turbo's between 1998 and 2000 on? the plastic is on the inlet side off the turbo. do you think that if the shaft play is o.k., that the turbo should not be failing? I bought it off a classified on this forum. should I flush the turbo out with like a carb or injector cleaner?
Well, thats why I bought one out of the classifieds of this forum. I dont want to put to much money into a piece of crap. Just wanna keep in running for a lil while longer. I'd rather put money into a better car this one.
Trying to load pix but my compter is being a pain in the A$$. But I did notice that the inlet finz on the turbo are worn a bit. would this be a problem? i'll get pix *** soon as possiable. The finz on this turbo are different the original one that came with the car. Oh, the plastic is in the middle of the impeller finz,(coned shaped) were the shaft and nut is. other than that, the turbo looks in good shape. But, No telling how everything is inside.
