ya i hear ya. Im pretty sure i used the method it shows in the owners manual, which is: "push a button on the remote. then within 60 seconds lock or unlock the door lock"
Im pretty sure this worked just fine on the 2nd fob i bought after i thought i lost my first one.

or you could try this method if you have another key:

I'm pretty sure thats doing the same thing though but it seems like either of these methods should work for you. one thing im fairly sure of is that you do NOT need to pay the dealer to program it because its that easy

^--- From what I read, any 2 button FOB will work with our cars. The only time you need to pay attention to those numbers is when getting a 3 button FOB (the one with the trunk release), basically on the 3 buttons, there are 2 different FOB's which look exactly the same, but only 1 of those works with our B5's. You wouldn't need the 3 button FOB because your car is pre-facelift and it didn't include the trunk release. In summary, buy any 2 button FOB. As far as the programming, please don't go to the dealer. I programmed it myself using the first link in my previous post. It really is very easy.
