Im not worked up, im just explaining why ggoodling was treated like he was and why people say what they say.

You are still missing my point. You said a 300-400hp (not even whp) 1.8t wasnt cheap or reliable, i begged to differ. I just pointed out that the engine is more than stong with just a basic H-beam rod upgrade that the block and all can handle hp ratings well over 600whp. There is a gti with just new rods and pistons with a stock block and head bolts making 675whp. I wouldnt call a $4k investment in a minor turbo upgrade a huge cost considering that its going to cost 2-3x that for a V8 swap if not more. Not to mention with gas prices well over $3/gallon here, who wants 15-20mpg when they can have just as much hp and tq with 30+ mpg? BTW, a gt28rs will make 20+ psi at just ~3k and will hold power all the way to 7k. Thats barely any lag.

Cincy, I'm not disputing the reliability of a big-power 1.8T. Any increase on any powerplant WILL invariably shorten service life, some marginally, not enough to notice, some more noticeably.

A 1.8T with big power, will definitely have a shorter service life, than another engine with over twice the capacity. It's always harder to dissipate heat in a smaller block than with a larger one.

As for GT28RS? Hmm. I'll be getting in touch with you regarding them.

I don't comparer forced induction motors to N/A V-8 motors myself; I find the arguement retarded.
I also don't feel that an A4 is the proper candidate for a V-8 swap with the S4 being on the same platform with a twin-turbo v-6. Unless someone is goingfor crazy numbers (500+), the thought of a V-8 in an A4 seems pretty pointless to me. If your plans are for anything besides going in a straight line, I think 500 hp is more than enough.

Feerocknok, in the world of modifying cars, not all is practical. Practical is leaving our cars the way they left the factory, or buying a more powerful car in a different platform for starters. The same could be said for "slammed" cars - not my bag, but as long as the owner's are happy with what they've achieved, then all's well. They have to live with their cars, not me.

There's nothing retarded about comparing forced induction with n/a at all. It's all a case of personal preference. There isn't a right way to go about things here.

Once I'm satisfied with my install, and it's running the way I want it to, then forced induction is my next step. Set-up, i.e twin / single turbochargers will all depend on space. So, it won't remain n/a for long.

Of course, I could have fitted my ex-Biturbo V6, but then, why wouldn't I have just bought an S4, if that was the objective? My aim is to build a car for me, and one that is not commercially available from an Audi dealer.

As for hp numbers, let's just say, they'll be plenty more than the stock 340 the S8 motor's blessed with. And handling issues? The all aluminium V8 32V IS lighter than the cast iron V6 30V, and definitely lighter than a Biturbo version.

I'd agree with you, it WOULD be a pointless exercise, if I had to employ the services of a specialist workshop, and I wasn't sure what my main objective was.

But, your points are duly noted.

Its called control. When not in boost and with an exhaust, you will get a good 30-32mpg.

A large displacement engine will generally last longer than a high output small displacement engine. It’s just a fact, ask any engine builder if you don’t believe me. I’m not saying a small engine is going to explode after a thousand miles but again, generally speaking, it’s not gunna last as long as the larger engine. And as for gas mileage, it’s actually not bad at all. Ls1’s get better gas mileage than my 30v 2.8 when you’re not on it.

As for the sound, the only 4 cylinder car I think sounds good is a sti, too bad they’re so damn ugly now. True the turbo helps but it just doesn’t scare me….actually it makes me giggle silently to myself.

There is a reason why you see ls1’s in everything. THEY ARE THAT GOOD!!! You can’t beat cost vs. performance; there is simply no engine (with the exception of some b and d series engines) that can match it. Not to mention there is pretty much no limit.

A turbo on an ls1 is something to be afraid of and you don’t need much pressure to transform them into beasts. I’ve put down over 550 horsepower to the ground only barely breaking double digit boost levels. That over 600 horsepower at the crank. On a daily basis when I have the boost down I can still make over 400 rwhp at 6psi. If I upgraded the turbo I could put down over 700hp before I would have to touch anything inside the engine. And that’s with the smaller 5.3l version of that engine. A fully worked Gen III engine will put down numbers in the multiple thousands.

I think it could be a cool project but honestly, in my opinion an ls1 in luxury car such as an A4 is as pointless as modding a 1.8t A4 to 500 horsepower.
