Default Variable Valve Timing Actuator

VW dealer did a courtsey check on my car, and said that the Variable Valve Timing Actuator needs replaced.

They want to charge $373.92 to change it.

I can't find any information on it? Does it go by another name, and what does it do??

its an actuator that varies the valve timing. its basicly like a cam chain tensioner that is pressurized with oil and depending on how much oil gets pumped into it, it will tighten or loosen the chain allowing the cams to move a few degrees independent of each other, varying the valve timing a few degrees. vaguely similar to VTECH but not really.

I dont believe any audi's have vvt they really dont believe in it. As for the actuator its probably just to make sure that the car has some room to tune its self, allow for knock and those type of normal engine parameters.

2001's have VVT but only on the 2.8. didnt even notice you are a 1.8t so you dont even have the valve they said needs to be replaced.

AWM (2001+) have vvt as ghost stated. It requires removing the valve cover. The most often cause for replacement is a leak from the seal, IIRC. It's been a while since I've done one. If you can replace a cam tensioner (which you should consider doing while in there), you can replace a vvt solenoid.

from the info i found it looked like VVT was only on the 2.8 of 2001. the later 05+ 1.8/2.0t's had VVT. i didnt think any B5 chasis 1.8's had it but i could be mistaken.

Variable cam timing cars have a cylindrical solenoid with a wire connection on the driver's side of the cylinder head.

I know it's an old thread, but many of us reference them for info.

ALL Audi V6 and V8's from 2000 on have true VVT...advances intake as rpms build. Even my 2000 VW Passat 2.8 has it. Don't know about 1.8T's, though...never had one.
