VCDS output tests - something wrong?
Not sure which section to post this because it's kinda specific to a few...
On my 1999, whenever I use VCDS to do the output tests (in the Engine module for example) I have to manually cycle through them - which is fine, I don't mind that - but they never report anything, good or bad.
As an example, I'll hit 'start/next' in the output tests in the engine module, the first one will be 'fuel injector for cylinder 1' and I'll hear a noise coming from under the hood but it'll never do anything else - no report on if it works or not, nor will it move on to the next test (though I've only waited about 60-70 seconds).
Am I missing something?
There isn't even a box in VCDS to see results like in this video. I just see the box under 'Activated output:' telling me what it's testing, but no boxes under that.
Again, apologies if this is in the wrong place, it could have gone under a few different sub-forums. I also checked the vcds forums but it seems nobody uses the program with cars pre-2005 or so.

Totally normal.
You are the source of the "report". If cyl. 1 injector is doing something while on that Output Test step, you verify it. Here's another way to look at it: when it tests the output of cyl. 1 injector, what function/sensor would report it as successful or not? I guess in theory [in this case] it could tell you that there isn't an open circuit or something, but if it's clicking/activated you can verify that.
You are also the factor driving VCDS from one step to the next.

Gotcha, so a sound that "sounds normal" is the verification I should be looking for?
I have to know what to be looking for, it's not just going to tell me it worked.
The tough part is that I don't know if the the quiet whine when it tests the injector means is a good whine or a bad whine... I never hear them with the engine off...
Or in a better example, I wanted to test the SAI pump and while it does come on during its output test, it comes on for maybe a second then turns off for a second, then on for a second, etc. I don't know if that's correct, or it should come on permanently, or on for 5 seconds then off for 5, or on/off 10 seconds, etc.
Thanks for your help though! I guess I should have done all this once when the car was working great to get a good base.
