I have searched forums, the internet and my Audi A4 Handbook for the answer to this one .........

What are the slots underneath the radio for on my 1999.5 Audi A4 B5

Shown here circled in red .......

It's for the auto climate control. There is a small fan back there with a thermometer.

Yeah that's how the HVAC control knows the air temperature inside the car. So when you set the climate control to 72*, it actually makes it 72*

It's always a good idea to blow those out with compressed air too, after a while they get clogged with dust and become inaccurate.
